Urban Combatives: A Practical Introduction

Urban Combatives is one of the core elements of training at Maverick Combatives, yet it’s often misunderstood. Rather than being a martial art in the traditional sense, it’s a practical approach to personal safety, built around awareness, mindset and simple, reliable skills.

Not a Sport, Not a Performance

Urban Combatives isn’t about competition or demonstration. There are no points to score and no audience to impress. The focus is entirely on real-world protection — recognising danger early, avoiding it where possible and responding decisively when there’s no other option.

Awareness Comes First

Much of Urban Combatives training happens before any physical response is needed. Students learn to recognise pre-conflict cues, understand how confrontations typically develop, and make assertive decisions early, often long before a situation becomes physical.

Simple Skills, Genuinely Retained

Techniques are kept deliberately simple. Under real stress, complicated movements are difficult to recall, so Urban Combatives focuses on a small number of high-percentage skills that can actually be remembered and used when it matters, rather than a large syllabus that looks good in training but falls apart under pressure.

How It Complements Krav Maga

Urban Combatives works alongside our Krav Maga training, adding a strong self-protection mindset to the physical skills already being developed. Together, the two give students a well-rounded understanding of both technique and the awareness needed to avoid trouble in the first place.

Getting Started

Our Urban Combatives classes run across Plymouth and Torbay, open to complete beginners as well as those with existing martial arts experience.
